Private Transfers to Stonehenge

Stonehenge is a prehistoric stone circle on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, about 88 miles southwest of central London. Built in stages between roughly 3000 and 1500 BC, its ring of standing sarsen stones, some weighing over 25 tonnes and topped by horizontal lintels, remains one of the great engineering feats of the ancient world. The monument is a UNESCO World Heritage Site managed by English Heritage, surrounded by a wider ceremonial landscape of burial mounds and earthworks.

Nobody knows for certain why it was built. Theories range from a temple aligned to the solstices to a place of healing or an ancient burial ground, and that enduring mystery is a large part of why more than a million people visit every year.

Standing before stones raised 4,500 years ago is one of England's genuinely unmissable experiences. The modern visitor centre houses an excellent exhibition and reconstructed Neolithic houses, and a shuttle runs the mile and a half from the centre to the circle itself, though many visitors enjoy walking part of the route across the plain. The site generally opens daily from morning until late afternoon or early evening depending on the season, and timed tickets booked in advance are strongly recommended.

Stonehenge also combines beautifully with the medieval city of Salisbury and its cathedral, the historic town of Bath, or Windsor Castle on the way back to London, which is easy to arrange when you have a private car and driver for the day.

There is no train station at Stonehenge. Public transport means a train to Salisbury followed by a connecting tour bus, and group coach tours run to fixed schedules with limited time at the stones. A private transfer is the most flexible way to visit: you choose the departure time, travel directly door-to-door in around two hours from central London, and your driver waits on site for as long as you need.

For travellers landing at Heathrow, Stonehenge makes a superb first or last day in England, roughly 90 minutes from the terminal along the M3 and A303. Because the fare is fixed in advance and waiting time is agreed upfront, a private car often costs less than multiple tour tickets for families and small groups, while being far more comfortable.
